How To Love Back Cricket Again?

Ever since Indian team's semi-final loss to Sri Lanka (by forfeit) in the world cup 1996, I have been a die hard cricket fan. After all, why would you not fall in and love and be emotionally attached to the game, if you see a cricketer crying (read- Vinod Kambli), for not being able to win it for his country? That was the effect that game had on me!

Needless to say, I probably remember all the matches India have played ever since - won or lost and remember all the major milestones that the team and its individuals have been able to secure over the past years! 

But, then came the scandal of match fixing that hit the nation hard in 2000, thereby, ending the career (or so it seemed), of few individuals (like Ajay Jadeja and Mohammad Azharuddin). And just when it seemed that my love for the game would last only for couple of years, came this snobbish little son of a gun - Saurav Ganguly, who changed everything that this game was all about in India. 

Suddenly, it all seemed like a fairy tale! There was passion that you could see in the eyes of every cricketer who took the field after that scandal. Saurav Ganguly, reimposed the faith of the whole nation in the game, which by now was being seen as- not the game of gentlemen anymore! And bang, my love was back on track for a long, very long relationship with the game. 

Time kept on moving and my casual affair turned into a mature relationship by the early part of 2013 (the spot fixing by Pakistani cricketers did not really harm it, as they have always been known to be notorious kids of the school) till the time S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by the Delhi Police on the allegations of IPL match fixing. 

The act of Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan did not really disappoint me that much as these were two unknown cricketers toiling their butt-off in the domestic circuit, knowing that they were not good enough to ever play at the highest level and some extra cash might just make their future that much secure. What disheartened me was S Sreesanth, a stupidly animated character on and off the field, who had tasted success at the international level and was already earning good money with his IPL contract and other endorsements, was a part of it. 

As a viewer who contributs to the millions of the rupees that the BCCI, the cricketers, IPL and other brands earn- I felt cheated! 

But the real surprise came when Rajasthan Royals team owner Raj Kundra and Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan were apprehended by the Police for their alleged involvement in betting.

In the hour of need, the BCCI President, N Srinivasan stepped aside (after a mammoth denial to do so) and was succeeded by Jagmohan Dalmiya, till the time his nephew and the owner in Principal Gurunath Meiyappan was given a clean chit by 'the internal inquiry commission set up by the BCCI itself, which surely lacked in credibility, if not conviction.

Fast forward July-end and the committee has given clean chit (as expected), to not only Gurunath Meiyappan but also to Raj Kundra, thus, paving the way back for Srini (as Srinivasan is popularly known) as the dictator of the BCCI. 

As I told earlier, that my casual affair had turned into a serious relationship, thereby, this time I was able to understand more about these incidents. 

So there is what I think happened behind the curtains...

I knew that, while the police will never be able to fetch Meiyappas' and Kundras' necks due to their stature and money.. it was evident from the beginning that the 'in house' investigation of BCCI was just a sham... Srinivasan always knew that it was just a matter of time when he would make a comeback and he had to act to fool people and gain few more supporters who could stand by his side. 

In what I would consider a masterstroke, N Srinivasan, welcomed with open arms, Jagmohan Dalmiya as the working president- who he himself had made sure, was an outcast from the BCCI till recently, on the charges of mishandling of funds. With this he not only gained an ally for the upcoming elections of the BCCI, but a mind that is as shrewd as they come and can help him sustain his powers in the long run in cricket administration. 

Jagmohan Dalmiya, on the other hand has made sure that he also was back in the good books of the BCCI top bosses and in return... guaranteeing himself few more crores before retiring from work.

In between all these gains and losses, the Indian team is on a victory road that frankly speaking, do not excite me at all these days, such is the breach in the wall of trust that these administrators have caused. All the matches have lost their sheen and always carry a cloud of doubt. No Dhoni's or Jadeja's will be ever able to bring the trust back- at least for the time being!

The Jadejas are back as cricket experts on national TV, the Azhars are now MP's... The truth is, there will never be a punishment sever enough in cricket that would make sure that none of the next generation players fear to be part of any scandal. For, they all know- if not cricket, there would always be bureaucracy! 

And for the viewers like us, the questions remains- how to love back this game?
